The Ministry of Defense of Armenia has proposed amendments and additions to the Law on “Defense” and “Military Service”, as a result of which female citizens of Armenia will have the right to enlist, but on a voluntary basis, according to “Sputnik” news agency.
“The period of compulsory military service for women will be set for a period of 6 months,” Defense Minister Suren Babikian, who presented the draft, said.
The minister stressed that “women have the right to refuse service in the army, before receiving the invitation to serve, and the military service of women will be carried out exclusively in training military units, without drawing lots, and after 6 months have passed, that is, upon demobilization, women will receive an honorary sum of one million Armenian drams.”
“Those who wish to volunteer for a longer period after 6 months have passed can submit an application and serve in the army for 5 years,” he added.
