Alberta Muslim Social Association (AMSA) finished its relief tour in Lebanon which was held during Ramad President of the association, Mahmoud Mourra, talked to “Al-Kalima News” on his last visit to Lebanon along with his team where they distributed financial aid to families in need following the ongoing financial crisis in the country . This crisis has paralyzed Lebanon’s economy and has driven many Lebanese families to bein need and financially unstable.

Mr. Mourra explained the social activity of the AMSA which grew after the October 17th movement in Lebanon where it led to many charity initiatives to help the Lebanese community. Amongst those is the large aid campaign which was held after the August 4th explosion in the port of Beirut. Mourra and his team had a closer look on the ground of the situation there and personally supervised the distribution of the financial aid after several discouraging experiences with both Canadian and Lebanese NGOs. They managed insisting  the distribution of money to those families and communities in need which required an extraordinary effort through attaining exact names of the individuals and families involved along with coordination with the local communities and the mayors of the respected villages. They carried out visits to the villages accompanied by their respected mayors to the houses of the targeted people to hand them the aid by hand in several parts of the country. From North to South, and Mt. Lebanon in addition to the capital Beirut, and the Palestinian refugee camps located there as well. Murra had the chance, along with his team, to have a closer look at the difficult situations people were facing there. They have visited 650 houses and helped 892 families. Furthermore, the association helped NGOs dealing with infants, orphans, and people with special needs.

Mr. Mourra asserted that, during their last initiative, the association made sure that the amounts of funding reached the people who need it most but, at the same time, withheld taking photos with its members as the purpose is to help people and not to humiliate them by sharing their photos. AMSA focused on helping productive people who have initiative and a will to work  and try to earn a living instead of sitting carelessly at home without any effort.

Mourra concluded that there is still lots of people in need and AMSA will continue its aid initiatives with its volunteers’ willingness and energy.
